        "content": "<p>President asks artists to cover up<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Like most people, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono sometimes<br>\nlikes to settle down on the couch and relax in front of the TV.<\/p>\n<p>However, the parade of bare belly buttons marching across the<br>\nscreen apparently makes the President uneasy, and he wants to do<br>\nsomething about it.<\/p>\n<p>Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Alwi Shihab said on<br>\nFriday the President was putting pressure on TV stations to stop<br>\nairing programs that included \"obscenities\".<\/p>\n<p>\"The President asked me to warn the media people of TV<br>\nprograms that show the bare navels of women. It is really<br>\ndisturbing,\" Alwi said after a Cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The President was apparently inspired by a preacher who<br>\nexpressed concern about risque TV programs during a sermon on<br>\nFriday at the Baiturrahman mosque in the presidential compound.<\/p>\n<p>Alwi said the President asked him to relay his concerns after<br>\nattending the prayer.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said the President wanted TV stations to pay<br>\nattention to the way presenters, singers and actors dressed, as<br>\nthe programs were also watched by children and young people.<\/p>\n<p>\"It would be better if they wore proper attire instead of<br>\nshowing such things in public,\" Alwi said.<\/p>\n<p>Alwi burst into laughter when asked whether it would be OK if<br>\nthe women just covered their navels with Band-Aids.<\/p>\n<p>The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission has issued guidelines<br>\nfor TV stations banning violence, mysticism and obscenity. The<br>\ncommission said that beginning this month it would get tough on<br>\nerrant stations, and called on the public to lodge complaints<br>\nagainst \"obscene\" programs.<\/p>\n<p>The commission has the power to revoke the licenses of TV<br>\nstations.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the Indonesian Ulemas Council demanded the government<br>\ntake action against performers, actors and any media that<br>\nexploited obscenity in order to make a profit.<\/p>\n<p>The previous House of Representatives proposed a bill on<br>\npornography that banned erotic kissing in public places. The<br>\nbill, however, was never endorsed.<\/p>",
