President accepts new title<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto agreed yesterday to accept
\nthe title Indonesia's Patron of Cooperative Promoters awarded him
\nby the Indonesian Cooperatives Council.<\/p>\n
Secretary-general of the Indonesian Cooperatives Council, Agus
\nSudono, said the subject was raised by the council in a meeting
\nwith Soeharto at Merdeka Palace, also yesterday.<\/p>\n
He said it was what council members wanted.<\/p>\n
Indonesia awarded the title Father of Cooperatives to co-
\nproclamator of independence and first vice president, Dr. Moh.
\nHatta, for his work in laying the foundations of Indonesia's
\ncooperatives movement.<\/p>\n
\"But because of the political situation then, he was unable to
\nfulfill all his ambitions,\" Agus said.<\/p>\n
Soeharto, on the other hand, has been promoting cooperatives
\nsince 1950, when he was still active in the army. At that time
\nhe set up a cooperative to help the wives of soldiers who went to
\nwar.<\/p>\n
\"And he has continued to support the development of
\ncooperatives,\" Agus said.<\/p>\n
The council told Soeharto that it was due to meet soon with
\nJimbaran group associated businesspeople and the Coordinating
\nBody for the Implementation of National Business Partnership
\nProgram group.<\/p>\n
Council chairman Sri Mulyono Herlambang said the meeting would
\ndiscuss proposals for joint activities and projects.<\/p>\n
The Jimbaran group consists of 48 tycoons who met in Jimbaran,
\nBali, almost two years ago, to work out programs of action to
\nhelp small and medium enterprises and eradicate poverty.<\/p>\n
The Coordinating Body for the Implementation of National
\nBusiness Partnership Program group was established with similar
\ngoals in January. It consists of 79 local businesses. (pwn)<\/p>",
