        "content": "<p>Preschool targets the poor<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): U.S.-based preschool High\/Scope is asking for<br>\ngovernment and private sector funding to set up preschools for<br>\ndisadvantaged children.<\/p>\n<p>The High\/Scope Foundation is one of many education franchises<br>\nbeing set up in Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>High\/Scope&apos;s Julie Wigton said the company planned to build<br>\npreschools in poor areas with programs tailored to local needs.<\/p>\n<p>The first High\/Scope preschool in Indonesia was established in<br>\nPondok Indah, South Jakarta. The basis of its curriculum is from<br>\nthe Ministry of Education and Culture, but this has been modified<br>\nto suit High\/Scope&apos;s objectives and philosophy<\/p>\n<p>The company&apos;s founder, Julie B. Mamangkey, said the preschool<br>\nwould also provide workshops for parents in rural areas.<\/p>\n<p>High\/Scope&apos;s Perry Preschool Project was created in 1962 to<br>\nserve &quot;at-risk&quot; children from poor neighborhoods in Ypsilanti,<br>\nMichigan, USA. Its founder, David P. Weikart, is now the<br>\npresident of High\/Scope Educational Research Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The project formulated High\/Scope Curriculum, which is<br>\ndesigned to suit each child&apos;s needs, according to their natural<br>\ndevelopment. The curriculum exposes children to direct<br>\nexperiences with people, objects, ideas and events.<\/p>\n<p>The curriculum treats children as active learners, who learn<br>\nbest from activities that they plan, carry out and reflect upon<br>\nby themselves with guidance from teachers, who encourage the<br>\nchildren to think and solve problems on their own. This method is<br>\ncalled &quot;Plan, Do, Review&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>The preschool in Jakarta teaches in Indonesian and English.<br>\nTuition in English costs US$600 a month and the enrollment fee is<br>\n$500. Tuition in Indonesian costs Rp 900,000 ($370) a month and<br>\nthe enrollment fee is Rp 1 million. (40)<\/p>",
