        "content": "<p>Prepare for failure of contraceptives: Expert<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): A family planning consultant called for better<br>\npublic education on the use of contraceptives, especially<br>\nregarding the possibility of failures.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have always said that (family planning) is a human effort,<br>\nand cannot be guaranteed 100 percent,\" said Ieda Purnomo Sigit<br>\nSidi, also a noted psychologist.<\/p>\n<p>If a contraceptive fails, she said, women should be educated<br>\nenough to help them face an unplanned pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>\"Doctors must help in counseling the women, who may face a<br>\npersonal conflict of not wanting a baby but not being able to<br>\nreject it either,\" Sidi said. \"The mother's psychological<br>\ncondition could affect the baby's wellbeing in the future.\"<\/p>\n<p>Sidi, a consultant at the National Family Planning Board, was<br>\ncommenting on a report of a woman demanding that her obstetrician<br>\nbe held responsible when she fell pregnant despite<br>\nhim administering contraceptive injections.<\/p>\n<p>The injection method has a failure rate of 0.001 percent, an<br>\nofficial at planning board said.<\/p>\n<p>The Kompas daily quoted the doctor, Sabaruddin, as saying that<br>\nhe had written to the manufacture of the contraceptive injection,<br>\nasking whether the product was outdated.<\/p>\n<p>The woman, who was unnamed, was discovered to be pregnant when<br>\nshe came for her second injection on April 11.<\/p>\n<p>She had first received the three-monthly injection six weeks<br>\nafter delivering her last child December 7, and had then said she<br>\nhad not engaged in intercourse.<\/p>\n<p>The manufacturer told Sabaruddin, a former head of the<br>\nIndonesian Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the<br>\ninjections were still in good condition and that the<br>\nmanufacturers, therefore, could not be held responsible for its<br>\nfailure.<\/p>\n<p>However, they said contraceptive injections should be<br>\nadministered five days after delivery. This statement is<br>\ncontradictory to the instructions on the package which said it<br>\nshould be first injected on the fifth day of a women's cycle or<br>\nsix weeks after giving birth.<\/p>\n<p>They said the injection, made in the United States, received<br>\napproval from the Food and Drug Association in 1992. They also<br>\nreportedly rejected Sabaruddin's suggestions that the<br>\ninstructions be changed as they would have to apply for approval<br>\nagain.<\/p>\n<p>Sabaruddin was not available for confirmation yesterday.
