Prefabricated houses to be donated by Taiwan<\/p>\n

The International Buddhism Organization of Taiwan will donate
\n1,000 prefabricated houses for flood victims living along
\nriverbanks whose houses were badly damaged during three weeks of
\nflooding in late January and early February.<\/p>\n
\"The organization will provide the houses for free. They have
\nconducted a similar project in Nepal,\" said Governor Sutiyoso on
\nTuesday at City Hall after meeting executives of the
\norganization.<\/p>\n
The city will provide the land while the organization will
\nbuild the houses, each measuring 36 square meters. Each house,
\nmade of fiberglass, will have three bedrooms and a bathroom.<\/p>\n
Although the organization is providing the houses for free,
\nthe administration plans to rent them at low rates to people
\nliving along the Ciliwung riverbank.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said construction of the houses would begin within
\nthree months after the administration provided the land.<\/p>\n
\"If this project is a success, the organization has promised
\nto build another 3,000 houses next year,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Besides building the houses, city spokesman Muhayat said the
\norganization, which will cooperate with a local Buddhist group
\nhere, also plans to build a hospital.<\/p>\n
\"We (the city administration) will provide the land for them,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Contrary to the governor's statement, Muhayat said the houses
\nwould be used as shelters for street children due to limited land
\nfor houses.<\/p>\n
\"Most probably, the houses will serve as shelters for street
\nchildren. As for the flood victims and people living along
\nriverbanks, we'll build low-cost apartments,\" he said, adding
\nthat the land would not otherwise be enough to accommodate 50,000
\npeople.<\/p>",
