Preachers demand arrest of mayor<\/p>\n
BATAM, Riau: A group of Muslim preachers demanded on Monday
\nthat the local police bring Mayor Nyat Kadir and Deputy Mayor
\nAsman Abnur to justice for their alleged involvement in the
\nopening of a casino in the Tering Bay resort here.<\/p>\n
Iskandar Zulkarnaen, representing the Batam Association of
\nMuslim Preachers, said the police were unfair for declaring the
\nhead of the municipal tourism agency, Buralimar, the sole suspect
\nin the case.<\/p>\n
\"How come a municipality agency head dared to sign a contract
\nwith a company without the knowledge of the mayor, who is his or
\nher boss?\" Iskandar said.<\/p>\n
He was referring to a memorandum of understanding signed by
\nBuralimar and PT Dewa Menara Wisata on the operation of an
\nintegrated tourist resort in the Tering Bay area, which would
\ninclude a casino.<\/p>\n
Gambling is banned under Indonesian law.<\/p>\n
Batam Police chief Sr. Comr. Suhartono refused to accede to
\nthe demand, saying the investigation of the case had been taken
\nover by the provincial police.<\/p>\n
Separately, Asman also declined to comment on reports that he

AMBON, Maluku: Two Thai nationals who died recently of AIDS
\nhave been buried here, an Indonesian Navy officer said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Commander of the Ambon naval base Lt. Col. Ibrahim Sadong said
\nthe Thais, identified as Sajian and Tong Sri, died earlier this
\nmonth after two weeks receiving treatment in the Navy Hospital.
\nThey were buried in Kebun Cengkeh public cemetery in Sirimau
\ndistrict.<\/p>\n
The two worked as sailors of a vessel serving fishing
\ncompanies operating out of Ambon, the capital of Maluku.<\/p>\n
Sadong said it remained unclear how long the Thai nationals
\nhad been living with the virus.<\/p>\n
The vessel on which the two worked was quarantined at Halong
\nnaval base for further investigation, which later found that two
\nmore sailors had contracted with the virus.<\/p>\n
The fishing boat has been sent back home, along with the two
\nother sailors with full-blown AIDS, Sadong said.<\/p>\n
