Preacher summoned on mid-May riots<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The police have summoned Anton Medan, a former
\nconvict turned Moslem preacher, for questioning Monday on
\nsuspicion of his involvement in the mid-May riots in the city.<\/p>\n
City police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said Anton would
\nhave the chance to explain reports he had a role in the May 13 -
\nMay 15 riots.<\/p>\n
\"We have received several reports about his involvement in the
\nlooting and burning incidents and we want to hear from him about
\nwhat actually happened,\" Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
Anton has rejected two summons from the military police on the
\ngrounds he is not a military member.<\/p>\n
His lawyer, Munir, from the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation
\n(YLBHI) confirmed that he had received the summons from the
\npolice for Monday's questioning.<\/p>\n
\"Anton has asked me to be his lawyer. But we haven't decided
\nyet whether to represent him or not. If there are strong
\nindications that he was involved (in the riots), we will not
\ndefend him,\" Munir told media at City Police Headquarters
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Anton has denied allegations that he was one of the organizers
\nof the riots, which claimed hundreds of lives and caused huge
\nmaterial losses.<\/p>\n
According to the former hoodlum, he was in a crowd along Jl.
\nGunung Sahari in Central Jakarta during the riot, but only to
\ncall on people not to destroy shops and other buildings. (edt)<\/p>",
