Following viral social media posts showing a well-known shopping\ncentre in South Jakarta installing high iron fences around its\nperimeter, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has requested that mall\nmanagement remove them.<\/p>\n
\u201cRegarding the installation of fences, I have also observed this. It\nmay stem from certain concerns, but at the appropriate time, I will\ncertainly request that those fences be removed,\u201d Pramono told reporters\nin the Blok M area, South Jakarta, on Friday (31\/7\/2026).<\/p>\n
Pramono believes that the excessive anxiety displayed by mall\nmanagement through the installation of high fences is not a positive\ndevelopment. He stated that his administration will coordinate with law\nenforcement agencies, including the TNI and Polri, to reassure the\npublic that Jakarta remains safe.<\/p>\n
\u201cExcessive anxiety is not good. As the Governor of Jakarta, I will\ncoordinate with the TNI, Polri, and other law enforcement agencies to\nguard Jakarta. We experienced concerns like those in August last year,\nbut hopefully, that will not happen again. I am confident it won\u2019t,\u201d he\nadded, asserting that Jakarta remains a safe and comfortable city for\neveryone to enjoy.<\/p>\n
Previously, the Chairman of the Indonesian Shopping Centre Management\nAssociation (APPBI), Alphonzus Widjaja, clarified that the fences were\nnot installed due to threats of riots. According to him, the primary\nobjective is to organise visitor entry and exit points more orderly.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe main goal is to regulate the flow of visitors entering and\nexiting. If it is open, visitors can enter and exit from anywhere, which\ncan endanger the surrounding traffic,\u201d Alphonzus told CNBC Indonesia\nduring an event at the Ministry of Trade Auditorium in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He noted that the use of fences is not a new practice in shopping\ncentres, as many malls have utilised them since they first began\noperations. However, he acknowledged that the fences also serve as a\nsecurity perimeter for malls located near areas that frequently host\ndemonstrations.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the same time, some shopping centres are located near centres of\nprotest activity. Therefore, I believe this serves as a security\nboundary against such demonstrations,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
When asked if the fences were an anticipatory measure against riots,\nAlphonzus denied the notion, emphasising that the security measures are\nfocused on access control and protecting the mall area from nearby\nprotest activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do not believe it is about riots. The primary goals are, first, to\norganise visitor access so it is centralised. Second, it provides a\nboundary. While demonstrations are not prohibited as long as they have\npermits, this provides a security perimeter,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
