Prabowo stressed that the law must indeed be upheld, but\nsaid there must be no errors in the judicial process. The head of state\nthen laid out his reasons for granting amnesty and abolition to\ncorruption convicts. Prabowo had previously granted amnesty to\nIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Secretary General Hasto\nKristiyanto and abolition to sugar import corruption convict Thomas\nTrikasih Lembong, who served as Trade Minister from 2015 to 2016. \u201cI am\ndetermined to uphold the law. There is no compromise. We must enforce\nthe law properly. But there must be no miscarriage of justice. The law\nmust not be used as a tool to persecute political opponents,\u201d Prabowo\nsaid in his speech at the Indonesia Economic Outlook 2026 in Jakarta on\nFriday, February 13, 2026. Prabowo stated he had the courage to make the\namnesty and abolition decisions because he felt there were grounds for\ndoubt. According to him, courts must render decisions based on\nconviction and complete evidence, free from doubt. \u201cI have proven that I\nhave the courage to grant abolition, the courage to grant amnesty, when\nI feel something is not right. Our courts must deliver fair decisions,\nbeyond reasonable doubt,\u201d Prabowo said. The Gerindra Party chairman said\nhe wants to create legal certainty to guarantee stability for the\npeople. In his view, if there is a possibility that a defendant is not\nguilty, the court must not hand down a final verdict against them. \u201cAs\nthe holder of the people\u2019s mandate, I am responsible. I want the rule of\nlaw in Indonesia. I want legal certainty,\u201d Prabowo said. The former\nDefense Minister added that the prerequisite for a nation\u2019s success is\nthat its people must live under a clean and just government. \u201cI am\ndetermined, together with my team, to build a clean and just\ngovernment,\u201d he said. In late July 2025, Prabowo decided to grant\nabolition to Tom Lembong and amnesty to Hasto Kristiyanto. Tom Lembong\nhad previously been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison in the sugar import\ncorruption case, while Hasto Kristiyanto was sentenced to 3.5 years in\nprison for bribing former General Elections Commission (KPU)\ncommissioner for the 2017\u20132022 term, Wahyu Setiawan.<\/p>",
