President Prabowo Subianto issued stern remarks against perpetrators\nof corruption whilst delivering a speech at the inauguration of five\ndams in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, on Friday (10\/7). In his address,\nPrabowo affirmed his preference for speaking honestly, as it is, for the\npeople\u2019s interest rather than merely maintaining polite rhetoric.<\/p>\n
His firm statement arose when Prabowo touched on the presence of\njournalists covering the event. He was aware that his use of harsh terms\nto describe corruptors could attract public attention.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are journalists here, so I must not speak carelessly, I must\nspeak cautiously. I must speak politely. Am I not allowed to call\ncorruptors scoundrels? What will be blown up is \u2018Prabowo said\nscoundrels. A president must speak politely, gently.\u2019 Do you want me to\nspeak politely or do you want me to speak honestly?\u201d Prabowo said before\nthe gathered crowd.<\/p>\n
Prabowo revealed that his government faces considerable resistance in\nrealising various strategic programmes. He identified these obstacles as\ncoming from groups that have long profited from corrupt practices.<\/p>\n
According to the President, the government\u2019s success in achieving\nnumerous accomplishments in a short time was the result of the courage\nto confront the interests of these groups. \u201cWe are grateful for the\nachievements we have produced in such a short time, despite the\nresistance from many groups, especially the corruptors,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Despite using sharp language, Prabowo assured that the spirit of\neradicating corruption remains grounded in the prevailing legal\nframework. He guaranteed that the government would punish thieves of\nstate funds through a fair legal process without selectivity.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes I am grateful I have retired. I feel like confronting\nthese thieving corruptors. But it must be in accordance with legal\nprocedure, and we shall carry it out. We will uphold the law. And the\nlaw applies to everyone. Not only for the powerful, not only for the\nrich,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n
Prabowo reminded bureaucrats, the Indonesian National Armed Forces\n(TNI), the National Police, and the Attorney General\u2019s Office that all\nthe attributes and ranks they wear come from the people, and therefore\nthe people\u2019s interests must be the top priority.<\/p>\n
In closing, the Head of State asked all state apparatus to carry out\ndeep introspection in performing their duties. He emphasised that\nofficials are public servants financed by the people.<\/p>\n
\u201cI ask for introspection, especially all our bureaucrats, let us all\nintrospect. Military and police officials, introspect. You belong to the\npeople. Your stars come from the people. Your shoes come from the\npeople. Your caps come from the people. Never forget that.
