President Prabowo Subianto has responded to Finance Minister Purbaya\nYudhi Sadewa\u2019s report that several economists are sceptical about\nIndonesia\u2019s economic resilience and are predicting a recession.<\/p>\n
In response, Prabowo characterised such commentators and economists\nas unpatriotic and driven by agendas contrary to national interests.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn my view, that is a narrow attitude, not a patriotic one, perhaps\nborn from a sense of defeat and lack of power,\u201d Prabowo said during a\nFull Cabinet Session in Jakarta on Friday, 13 March 2026.<\/p>\n
Prabowo indicated he intends to discipline those who incite unrest\nthrough dissatisfaction with the government\u2019s approach and its efforts\nto maintain economic stability domestically.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to discipline them. I also have intelligence data. When I\nwas outside government, now that I am president, I receive intelligence\nreports daily. I understand who is funding these people,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa reported to President\nPrabowo that certain economists were making unusual claims that\nIndonesia\u2019s economy is facing recession.<\/p>\n
However, he emphasised that Indonesia\u2019s economy is actually in an\nacceleration phase following pressures experienced in the previous year.\nHe presented several macroeconomic indicators supporting this, including\nthe Manufacturing Managers\u2019 Index (PMI), Consumer Confidence Index\n(IKK), and Mandiri Spending Index (MSI).<\/p>\n
\u201cI deliberately included this because outside there are many saying\nwe are already in recession, these odd economists say we are already in\nrecession, just waiting for total collapse,\u201d Purbaya said during the\nFull Cabinet Session at the State Palace in Jakarta on Friday, 13 March\n2026.<\/p>\n
Purbaya noted that the February 2026 Managers\u2019 Index PMI had reached\nits highest level in two years at 53.8, whilst the IKK moved to 125.2,\nand the MSI trend rose to 360.7, indicating acceleration in the nation\u2019s\neconomy.<\/p>\n
He additionally pointed out that automobile sales grew 12.2 per cent\nin February. \u201cThis is not trivial, sir. Last year it was negative, now\nit has become positive and is accelerating. We are far from what these\noutside economists are talking about\u2014economic collapse\u2014you see this a\nlot on TikTok, sir,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n
