        "content": "<p>President Prabowo Subianto is encouraging higher education\ninstitutions to strengthen their role as spaces for developing science,\ntechnology, and innovation that provide real benefits to society. He\nmade the remarks while closing the National Discourse at the 2026\nScience, Technology, and Industry Convention on Sunday (28\/6). Prabowo\nstressed that universities possess academic freedom which must be\nsafeguarded. However, he believes this freedom should be interpreted as\na space to develop knowledge, exchange ideas, and generate constructive\nthinking. \u201cCampuses have academic freedom. Academic freedom, not other\nkinds of freedom, let alone campuses becoming places for thinking or,\nshall we say, opposition,\u201d said Prabowo. He considered differences of\nopinion to be a normal part of academic life. Campuses, he said, are\nindeed places where various ideas, views, philosophies, and innovations\nare tested through discussion and debate. \u201cThis is what we want, we are\non one big ship called the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.\nAs I said yesterday, we have different views, no problem. The university\nis a place where ideas are contested, a contest of ideas, a contest of\nviews, a contest of philosophies, a contest of innovations,\u201d he stated.\nPrabowo then invited higher education institutions to focus more on\ndeveloping science and technology that have a direct impact on the\npeople. He reminded them that the operation of higher education is also\nsupported by the public through the state. \u201cLet campuses actively engage\nin science and technology to provide benefits to the people who fund\nthose campuses. Who fund all educational institutions,\u201d he said. On that\noccasion, Prabowo also touched on the importance of the responsibility\nof all elements of the nation to return the greatest possible benefit to\nthe community. According to him, it is not only educational institutions\nthat receive state support, but the private sector also enjoys various\nfacilities sourced from public money, such as electricity and fuel\nsubsidies. \u201cThe private sector plays a very important role. But the\nprivate sector also enjoys the people\u2019s money. From electricity\nsubsidies, fuel subsidies, with all the efforts we make.
