Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - President Prabowo Subianto targets\nIndonesia no longer importing fuel oil (BBM) within the next two to\nthree years. This follows plans to close Diesel Power Plants (PLTD) that\ncontribute 20% to national fuel oil imports.<\/p>\n
As a replacement, the government will promote the use of Solar Power\nPlants (PLTS). It will also implement an electric motorcycle conversion\nprogramme and encourage the use of electric stoves.<\/p>\n
President Prabowo stated that closing the PLTDs would save Indonesia\n200,000 barrels of oil per day (bph). In line with that decision, as a\nsubstitute, the government will build Solar Power Plants (PLTS) with a\ncapacity of 100 Gigawatts (GW) within the next two years.<\/p>\n
Prabowo conveyed that the government has decided to implement the 100\nGW electrification programme.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere will be no more power plants using diesel or solar [fuel].\nNo,\u201d clarified President Prabowo at the inauguration of the Electric Bus\nFactory in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday (9\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
\u201cWith that, we will close 13 Diesel Power Plants under PLN,\u201d added\nPrabowo.<\/p>\n
According to Prabowo\u2019s notes, closing these diesel plants would save\nIndonesia 200,000 barrels of oil per day (bph), or 20% of fuel oil\nimports. Currently, Indonesia imports around 1 million barrels per\nday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe still need to import 1 million barrels a day. By closing the\nPLTDs, we immediately save 20%. With the 100 GW later, we will save\nenormously; perhaps in two to three years, we won\u2019t need to import fuel\noil at all.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have great strength; we are truly serious, we will be strong, we\nwill stand on our own feet,\u201d emphasised Prabowo.<\/p>\n
Previously, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology,\nBrian Yuliarto, also revealed President Prabowo\u2019s directives to reduce\nfuel oil and LPG imports.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe from higher education, with research results and studies, are\nasked to support the acceleration of solar cells, especially PLTS, to\nreplace expensive power plants, namely those based on diesel,\u201d said\nBrian after a limited meeting on energy transition at the State Palace\nrecently.<\/p>\n
Prabowo also requested acceleration of the conventional motorcycle to\nelectric motorcycle conversion programme. This is because fuel\nconsumption from motorcycles also takes a significant portion.<\/p>\n
\u201cElectric vehicles. Why? Because the two things above, power plants\nstill using diesel and vehicles, are still dependent on fuel oil,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Brian explained that the current price of imported fuel oil is quite\nhigh. Thus, the impact is significant on state finances. Therefore,\nreplacing PLTDs with PLTS and converting to electric vehicles can reduce\nIndonesia\u2019s dependence on fuel oil imports.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo that our dependence on imports, our dependence on prices that may\nchange quickly, can be reduced,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Brian said the president requested accelerating the\nwidespread use of electric stoves in society.<\/p>\n
This is because Indonesia\u2019s dependence on LPG is also quite large.\nThus, when prices rise, it becomes a burden on state finances.<\/p>\n
