President Prabowo Subianto has expressed his determination to begin\nthe construction of the Giant Sea Wall along the North Coast of Java\n(Pantura). The strategic project is projected to take 15 to 20 years to\ncomplete, serving as a long-term safeguard for coastal areas against the\nthreat of rising sea levels.<\/p>\n
The statement was made during the Government\u2019s introduction of the\nDraft State Budget (RUU APBN) for the 2027 fiscal year in Jakarta.\nPrabowo emphasised that as the eighth president, he must take the\ninitial step, even if the project\u2019s inauguration will be carried out by\nfuture leaders.<\/p>\n
\u2018This Giant Sea Wall project will take 15 to 20 years to complete. It\nis a long time. I do not know which president will inaugurate it, but I\nam determined that the eighth president will start this project,\u2019\nPrabowo stated.<\/p>\n
The construction plan involves dividing the project into 15 segments\nstretching from Banten Province to Gresik in East Java. The President\nbelieves that if work is carried out simultaneously across all segments,\nthe construction duration could be shortened to less than two\ndecades.<\/p>\n
Prabowo also revealed that the National Research and Innovation\nAgency (BRIN) has produced technological breakthroughs that will be\nimplemented in the project. He stressed the importance of having the\ncourage to initiate long-term protective infrastructure, citing the\nNetherlands\u2019 success in securing its territory from sea disasters.<\/p>\n
\u2018This is an absolute necessity; we must not wait for disaster to\nstrike. The Giant Sea Wall on the north coast of Java must become a\nprotective belt for millions of residents to save tens of thousands of\nhectares that are already sinking,\u2019 he asserted.<\/p>\n
Beyond functioning as a barrier against sea water intrusion, the\nengineering project is designed with a dual purpose.
