President Prabowo Subianto has set an ambitious goal to achieve 100 gigawatts of installed solar power capacity in Indonesia by 2029, accelerating the transition to green energy amid geopolitical uncertainties threatening national energy security. Speaking at the Indonesia-Japan Business Forum in Tokyo, he emphasised the urgency of maximising solar energy utilisation within the next three years, alongside leveraging domestic resources like geothermal and biofuels. This initiative aims to build a robust energy defence, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting electric vehicle adoption to curb petrol consumption.

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - President of the Republic of Indonesia
Prabowo Subianto is accelerating steps towards the transition to green
energy, one of which involves the target of constructing a
massive-capacity Solar Power Plant (PLTS). He targets Indonesia to reach
an installed capacity of up to 100 Gigawatts (GW) at least by 2029.

Prabowo emphasised that the government will intensify efforts to
maximise the utilisation of electricity from solar energy over the next
three years.

“We want to move very quickly to use electricity from solar energy.
We have a plan and we are determined to proceed as quickly as possible;
within three years, we want to achieve 100 gigawatts of solar energy,”
said Prabowo at the Indonesia-Japan Business Forum in Tokyo, Japan, on
Monday (30/3/2026).

The plan to accelerate the construction of PLTS is considered urgent
to realise. According to him, the escalation of conflicts and ongoing
geopolitical uncertainties, particularly in the Middle East region, pose
a threat to national energy supply stability.

“For us, this is more urgent because the geopolitical situation in
the Middle East provides strategic uncertainty for our energy security,”
Prabowo stressed.

As anticipation, the government continues to strive to secure
supplies through the utilisation of domestic resources.

In addition to solar power, Indonesia also has great potential in the
geothermal sector and is intensifying the production of biofuel such as
50% biodiesel (B50) and bioethanol.

On the other hand, the government is also promoting the acceleration
of the transformation to electric vehicles to reduce petrol consumption
for more than 114 million conventional motorcycles currently in
existence.

It is hoped that this can build a strong energy defence, while the
national coal reserves will serve as a reserve of last resort.
",
