Jakarta \u2014 President Prabowo Subianto has reiterated Indonesia\u2019s\ncommitment to its membership of the Board of Peace (BoP) in Gaza, saying\nthe country is prepared to withdraw from the body if it does not deliver\ntangible support for Palestine\u2019s independence from Zionist Israel. The\nremarks were made during an audience with more than 160 ulama and kiai\nin a silaturahmi and dialogue held on the central courtyard of the\nPresidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday night (5 March).<\/p>\n
Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), K.H. Cholil\nNafis, who attended the gathering, explained that the main aim of\nIndonesia joining BoP is to support Palestine\u2019s independence. He said,\nif that aim is not achieved, Indonesia will not hesitate to leave the\nforum. \u2018In relation to BoP, the President is determined that the\nobjective is Palestinian independence. If it is not for Palestinian\nindependence, he is ready to step down.\u2019 He added: \u2018The President\npromised that if I am not useful in BoP, I will withdraw. He is\ncommitted to doing what is for Palestine\u2019s independence.\u2019<\/p>\n
Cholil Nafis also stressed that there were no discussions linking\nBoP\u2019s future to unilateral attacks on Iran, which was urged by the\nUnited States as the initiator of BoP in concert with Zionist Israel, a\nmember of the body. \u2018BoP is specific to Palestine.\u2019<\/p>\n
In a separate remark at the same venue, Nafis expressed the view that\nBoP is not very effective as a vehicle for advancing Palestinian\nindependence. He suggested Indonesia should strengthen the roles of\nexisting international organisations such as the Organisation of Islamic\nCooperation (OIC) and the United Nations (UN).<\/p>\n
Previously, Prabowo had floated the option of withdrawing from BoP\nduring a meeting with kiai and ulama at the Istana on 3 February\n2026.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the Front Pembela Islam (FPI) issued a letter to\nPresident Prabowo requesting Indonesia withdraw from BoP. Dedeh Rosidah,\nknown as Mamah Dedeh, was invited to the silaturahmi and dialogue with\nthe President.<\/p>\n
