The directive was issued after the President highlighted the\noverwhelming dominance of foreign-flagged ships in domestic freight,\nwhich currently accounts for 95 per cent of goods transportation. \u201cHow\nto develop our fleet, as the President sees that 95 per cent of goods\nshipments are under foreign flags. The plan is to shift this towards\nIndonesian-flagged vessels, and he has asked for a development plan,\u201d\nsaid Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani after a limited meeting at the\nPresidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Monday. Rosan stated that the\ngovernment will push to strengthen the national shipbuilding industry,\ninvolving both state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private shipyards, to\nproduce vessels that meet international standards and fulfil the needs\nof the national fleet. \u201cWe have shipyards, both SOE and private national\nones, which we want to improve and advance, so that shipbuilding can be\ndone in Indonesia according to good, international standards,\u201d he\nexplained. In the same meeting, Minister of Higher Education, Science,\nand Technology Brian Yuliarto said his ministry has been asked to focus\non technology and research development to support the national\nshipbuilding industry. Collaboration between universities and PT PAL is\nexpected to be a strategic step to strengthen domestic industrial\ncapacity. \u201cTogether with PT PAL, research and studies by professors in\nthe maritime field can grow our shipbuilding industry, thereby opening\nup employment and fulfilling our needs through domestic industry,\u201d Brian\nsaid. He added that Indonesia\u2019s demand for ships spans various sectors,\nfrom passenger transport to domestic logistics, representing a\nsignificant market potential that should be harnessed to drive the\ngrowth of the national shipbuilding industry.<\/p>",
