The government faces a policy dilemma with no truly comfortable\noptions.<\/p>\n
President Prabowo Subianto has ordered a large-scale evaluation of\nmining business permits (IUP) deemed problematic, especially those\nlocated in protected forest areas. This instruction was delivered during\nhis briefing at the Red and White Cabinet Working Meeting at the\nPresidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday (8\/4).<\/p>\n
Prabowo admitted to receiving reports of hundreds of mining permits\nwith unclear status. He then immediately checked with the relevant\nministries, including the forestry sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have also ordered the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. I\nreceived reports of hundreds of unclear mines or unclear IUPs in\nprotected forests and other forests. I checked with the Minister of\nForestry\u2014Alhamdulillah, this Forestry Minister is okay too. He hasn\u2019t\ngiven permission to cut wood yet,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Following these findings, Prabowo requested that the evaluation be\nconducted quickly and firmly. He emphasised that the government no\nlonger has room for tolerance towards permits that do not comply with\nregulations.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo there are several hundred\u2014Minister of Energy and Mineral\nResources, evaluate them immediately. If unclear, revoke all those IUPs,\nrevoke them all. We no longer have time to be too sympathetic; there\u2019s\nno sympathy now. We are only defending national interests and the\ninterests of the people. The interests of friends, cronies, family,\ngroups\u2014that\u2019s secondary,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The President even accelerated the evaluation deadline, which was\ninitially proposed as two weeks, to just one week. He requested that the\nresults be reported back immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo weeks? Nice try with two weeks. One week? The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has set regulations for\nthe 2024 IUPK extension, requiring the availability of mining reserves\nand fulfilment of six important criteria in accordance with Government\nRegulation Number 25 of 2024.<\/p>\n
