President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto has said the\nprincipal intention behind establishing the Red and White Village\nCooperatives, or Kopdes Merah Putih, is to eliminate loan sharks.\nAccording to Prabowo, loan sharks live by sucking the blood of\nfarmers.<\/p>\n
Prabowo made the remarks whilst delivering an address at the Plenary\nCabinet Session at the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Monday, 20\nJuly 2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cRegarding the Red and White Village Cooperatives, I would like to\nexplain a little about the intention behind them, namely to eliminate\nloan sharks. Loan sharks survive by sucking the blood of our farmers,\u201d\nPrabowo said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith interest of 1 per cent per day, it is impossible for our farmer\nproducers to rise. That is the goal,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
After the Kopdes Merah Putih were established, Prabowo discovered a\nfurther benefit: the cooperatives can shorten supply chains and save\nhundreds of trillions of rupiah.<\/p>\n
By way of example, he said that before the Kopdes Merah Putih\nexisted, farmers had to pass through many stages, from middlemen\ncollectors, distributors, sub-distributors, and wholesalers through to\nretailers, in order to sell their harvest.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt turns out, after research by the Minister of Agriculture, the\nprofits taken by these intermediary parties amount to 30 to 40 per\ncent,\u201d Prabowo said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the Red and White Cooperatives, KDMP, the margin is roughly 5\nto 10 per cent. I believe a 5 per cent take for the cooperative is\nsufficient. The remainder can be enjoyed by farmers and consumers. This\nis long-term economic security,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n
On the same occasion, Prabowo also announced that 1,000 Kopdes Merah\nPutih have begun operating. He went on to state that 30,000 more will be\nestablished in the near future.<\/p>\n
Prabowo admitted that the running of the Kopdes Merah Putih is not\nyet perfect and that many shortcomings remain.<\/p>\n
\u201cNaturally, having only operated for a month and a half, there are\nmany deficiencies.
