President Prabowo Subianto has said Indonesia rejected a loan offer\nfrom the International Monetary Fund (IMF) because the country is still\ncapable of carrying out development without depending on loans from the\ninstitution.<\/p>\n
Prabowo made the statement in his closing speech at the 35th\nNahdlatul Ulama (NU) Congress at the Bahrul Ulum Tambakberas Islamic\nBoarding School in Jombang Regency, East Java, on Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think yesterday, a few months ago, it was surprising \u2014 our Finance\nMinister in Washington DC was offered a loan from the IMF, and we turned\nit down. Thank you, but Indonesia can still manage without loans from\nthe IMF,\u201d Prabowo said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are now trying not to borrow too much money from anywhere.\nInviting investment is fine. If we do borrow money, we want to borrow\nmoney with the smallest possible interest rate,\u201d the President said.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the Head of State said the main focus of the\ntransformation strategy being implemented by the government is to\nimprove public welfare and lift as many Indonesians as possible out of\npoverty.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must be brave, and I have calculated carefully down to the last\nrupiah. I have calculated and I am confident and believe we will\nsucceed,\u201d Prabowo said.<\/p>\n
Prabowo said the government is targeting millions of Indonesians to\nescape poverty. He also said this achievement is beginning to be\ndemonstrated in the first two years of his administration.<\/p>\n
In the meeting, Purbaya confirmed that Indonesia has adequate fiscal\nbuffers. He explained that the IMF highlighted that global uncertainty\nwill continue for some time, driven among other things by geopolitical\ntensions and energy price dynamics.<\/p>\n
The IMF admitted it does not have the authority to reduce the level\nof global uncertainty.<\/p>\n
However, the international institution is preparing funding support\nshould any country require assistance.<\/p>\n
