President Prabowo Subianto has asserted that the Darussalam Gontor\nIslamic Boarding School must not be involved in practical politics in\norder to preserve the long-standing values of the century-old\ninstitution.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know that Gontor must not engage in politics. That is correct.\nGontor should not participate in practical politics, but it must\nunderstand politics,\u201d said Prabowo during his speech at the centenary\nthanksgiving reception in Ponorogo, East Java, as monitored via the\nPresidential Secretariat\u2019s YouTube broadcast in Jakarta on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Prabowo emphasised that the legendary boarding school has an\nobligation to maintain neutrality by positioning itself above all\npartisan interests.<\/p>\n
\u201cGontor must be above all political factions,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Although the institution must remain independent from the political\narena, the President believes this Islamic educational institution\ncontinues to play a vital role in the progress of society. He noted that\nstanding above all factions allows Gontor to contribute actively to\nvarious sectors of national development.<\/p>\n
\u201cGontor must not go anywhere [into politics], but it must be\neverywhere,\u201d said Prabowo.<\/p>\n
During the centenary celebrations, Prabowo also expressed his\nappreciation for the \u2018Panca Jiwa Gontor\u2019 (The Five Souls of Gontor) as a\nfoundation for national character building. He specifically mentioned\nthe five core values contained within it: sincerity, simplicity,\nself-reliance, Islamic brotherhood, and freedom.<\/p>\n
According to Prabowo, the fundamental principles instilled by the\nboarding school are highly relevant for widespread application in\nnational life.
