Jakarta (ANTARA) - The President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto,\nstated that the government is currently discussing the possibility of\nreturning the authority for teacher appointments to the central\ngovernment to improve the national education system.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, the entire education system must be improved. Starting with\nteacher recruitment, which is the most fundamental aspect,\u201d said Prabowo\nduring the \u2018President Prabowo Menjawab\u2019 programme, as quoted in Jakarta\non Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Prabowo explained that while decentralisation is part of a\nwell-intentioned spirit of democratisation, the execution of teacher\nrecruitment by local governments presents challenges in maintaining the\nobjectivity and quality of educators.<\/p>\n
He stated that the teacher appointment process needs to be based on\ncompetence, school requirements, and quality standards, rather than\npersonal connections or political interests.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf it is left to regency governments or governors, can we be certain\nof the quality of teacher recruitment? We must speak of reality. Is a\nregent objective, or do they appoint their relatives or campaign\nsupporters as teachers? This is our dilemma,\u201d said Prablagwo.<\/p>\n
To address the disparity in educator quality, Prabowo said the\ngovernment could implement courses, training, and capacity-building\nprogrammes for teachers so they can keep pace with developments in\nlearning methods and educational technology.<\/p>\n
Prabowo also positioned classroom digitalisation as a step towards\nreducing educational quality gaps, including helping teachers improve\ntheir teaching abilities and helping students access more engaging\nlearning materials.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is why I want to leapfrog. This is a difficulty, which is why I\nam implementing classroom digitalisation, so that teachers with fewer\nresources can learn from it, and underprivileged children can be\nmotivated to learn from it,\u201d said Prabowo.<\/p>\n
However, Prabowo emphasised that digitalisation cannot replace the\nrole of teachers, as fundamental educational reforms still require\nquality recruitment and teacher training.<\/p>\n
Prabowo also revealed plans for a \u2018crash programme\u2019 by recruiting top\nuniversity graduates from various disciplines to assist in teaching at\nthe most disadvantaged schools.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne step I am considering to address this issue is a crash\nprogramme; perhaps I will recruit the best graduates from all faculties\nto become teachers. Let us call them emergency teachers that we deploy\nto schools,\u201d said Prabowo.<\/p>\n
He gave an example that the government could initiate this programme\nat the primary school level by recruiting approximately 30,000 graduates\nto be placed in the most lagging schools.<\/p>\n
Additionally, Prabowo mentioned that the government could involve\nCivil Servants (ASN) who are currently working to undergo short-term\nassignments of two to three weeks in schools according to regional\nneeds.<\/p>\n
Prabowo emphasised that improving the quality of education must be\naccompanied by improvements in teacher welfare. \u201cThe important thing is\nthat we must improve teacher welfare, and we have already done much in\nmany areas,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n
