President Prabowo Subianto addressed forest and land fires in several\nparts of Indonesia during a plenary Cabinet meeting at Merdeka Palace in\nCentral Jakarta on Wednesday (21 October 2026). He said the fires were\ncaused by human intervention.<\/p>\n
Prabowo said he did not hesitate to describe individuals who\ndeliberately set forests alight as environmental terrorists.<\/p>\n
He called on the police, the Attorney General\u2019s Office, the Forestry\nMinistry, the Indonesian Military and intelligence agencies to\ninvestigate those responsible for the fires.<\/p>\n
\u201cMany corporations have turned out to bear responsibility, and\nmembers of the public have also caught individuals deliberately setting\nfires. We can regard this as environmental terrorism,\u201d Prabowo said.<\/p>\n
He also stressed that deliberate forest burning was a crime against\nhumanity because it endangered the health of millions of Indonesians.\nThe government, he said, could not treat the issue lightly.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are now tackling this on a large scale, but we will also\ninvestigate it fully. This time, we cannot continue to act as usual. If\nthe evidence is clear, we will act and revoke all permits held by\ncompanies that have violated the rules.<\/p>\n
