The administration of President Prabowo Subianto plans to develop the\nIndonesian space sector to ensure national sovereignty and unlock\neconomic potential. This initiative will begin with the formation of a\nSpace Directorate in 2025, in collaboration with the National Research\nand Innovation Agency (BRIN).<\/p>\n
This was stated by the Deputy for Macro Development Planning at the\nMinistry of National Development Planning\/Bappenas, Eka Chandra Buana,\nduring an exclusive interview with CNBC Indonesia in Jakarta on\nWednesday (16\/09\/2026).<\/p>\n
He noted that the sky is currently filled with numerous satellites\ndue to rapid technological advancements. While there are many benefits,\nEka stated that there is currently a lack of regulation, making\nsovereignty a primary focus.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are currently discussing terrestrial issues, but it extends to\nthe heavens. If we look up, there is no regulation in place yet. We can\nimagine that above our skies, there are thousands of satellites. This\nmust become a concern regarding what our sovereignty will look like,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Eka views space as a potential source of future growth.\nHe noted that Indonesia\u2019s location on the equator provides a strategic\nadvantage for satellite launches.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor example, the simplest case is that we are on the equator. If we\nare launching rockets (satellites), it is most efficient near the\nequator,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis could be utilised, for instance, as a launch site. Previously,\nthere were plans to launch rockets in Papua because the trajectory is\nmore effective,\u201d Eka added.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, budget constraints remain a challenge for developing\nspace potential in the future. Consequently, the Ministry of National\nDevelopment Planning\/Bappenas is implementing a scale of priorities for\nthe execution of this space development.<\/p>\n
The utilisation of space is identified in the National Long-Term\nDevelopment Plan (RPJP) 2025-2045 as a future megatrend.<\/p>\n
It is noted that the space economy is projected to grow significantly\nover the long term, with its value potentially reaching US$1 trillion\n(approximately Rp17,839 trillion) by 2040.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe space economy was estimated to reach US$469.0 billion in 2021\nand is predicted to continue increasing to US$1.0 trillion by 2040,\u201d\naccording to the National RPJP 2025-2045.<\/p>\n
