Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has accepted input from\nthe Head of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Suharyanto,\nurging that every Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) should have\nlogistics warehouses and stockpiles of aid ready for use when disasters\nstrike.<\/p>\n
The suggestion was conveyed by Suharyanto during a coordination\nmeeting on handling the impact of the earthquake in Nagekeo Regency,\nEast Nusa Tenggara (NTT), chaired by President Prabowo at an evacuation\npost at the Territorial Development Battalion (Yon TP) 834\/Wakanga Mere\nheadquarters in Tonggurambang Village, Mbay, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Based on monitoring of the Presidential Secretariat\u2019s YouTube\nchannel, Suharyanto said the availability of logistics in the regions\nbecame a problem when the earthquake disaster occurred.<\/p>\n

He said the President\u2019s community assistance, or the additional\nUnexpected Expenditure (BTT) of Rp20 billion for each of the eight\ndistrict governments in NTT, was very helpful in dealing with the impact\nof the disaster.<\/p>\n
However, for future disaster management, Suharyanto suggested that\nevery district\/city should have logistics stockpiles that can be used\nimmediately when a disaster occurs.<\/p>\n
According to him, the BNPB, as an instrument of the central\ngovernment, can indeed move to strengthen disaster management. However,\nthe BNPB needs time to bring in and distribute logistics to affected\nareas.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe BNPB is the President\u2019s instrument. We do not have a command\nrelationship with the BPBD,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Suharyanto explained that regional governments should be able to\nprovide basic assistance to the public in the early phase of a disaster,\nsuch as food, blankets, tents and mattresses, before assistance from the\nBNPB arrives.<\/p>\n
He proposed that provincial governments should have their own\nlogistics warehouses, as should district\/city governments. In this way,\ninitial assistance can be distributed immediately to affected\ncommunities.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen something happens at the outset, they can already provide\nassistance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs soon as something happens, affected communities can be given\nassistance first before the BNPB arrives,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Responding to the input, President Prabowo stated that he would note\nand consider the proposal nationally.<\/p>\n
\u201cGood, I think that is a good suggestion. We will note it later,\u201d\nsaid Prabowo.<\/p>\n
The Head of State then stated that the central government could help\neach province to have warehouses and food preparations to face\ndisasters. Similar measures would also be encouraged at the district\nlevel.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that is a good suggestion. So let us calculate it\nnationally, and later we will help each province, so that governors have\nwarehouses and food preparations, as do regents,\u201d said Prabowo.<\/p>\n
The President assessed that regional governments should indeed have\nlogistics reserves to face emergency conditions. However, if such\nmeasures have not yet been implemented optimally, the central government\nwill take steps to help realise them.<\/p>\n
