PPP vows to promote Moslem declaration<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The United Development Party (PPP) pledged on
\nMonday to promote the 11-point declaration of the Indonesian
\nMoslem Congress as the party's agenda during the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR) Special Session, saying it reflects
\nthe aspirations of the majority of Indonesians.<\/p>\n
\"I'm sorry I still cannot tell you which points of the
\ndeclaration will be included in our agenda,\" Antara quoted Qumari
\nAnwar, member of PPP faction in the Assembly, as saying.<\/p>\n
In its declaration, issued Saturday after the-five day
\ncongress, the 1,500 participants urged the government to abolish
\nPancasila as the sole ideology for political parties and mass
\norganizations.<\/p>\n
It also demanded a review of the role of the Armed Forces
\n(ABRI) in socio-political affairs, and the establishment of an
\nindependent body to investigate corruption practices.<\/p>\n
The congress also asserted that the government should conduct
\nthorough investigations over rights abuses in Tanjung Priok, the
\nJakarta port district, Lampung, Aceh, East Timor and Irian Jaya.
\nThe military has been blamed for these abuses.<\/p>\n
It also demanded a solution to the cases of rape and looting
\nduring the riots on May 13-15 in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The congress also called for better handling of the recent
\nrampant murders of ulemas in East Java and other provinces.<\/p>\n
It also appealed to all Moslems and Moslem-based political
\norganizations to harmonize their views to win next year's general
\nelection. \"The victory is aimed at the realization of a civic and
\ndemocratic society,\" the declaration said.<\/p>\n
The declaration however did not include the controversial
\nrecommendation of a congress commission that the country's
\npresident and vice president should be Moslem and male. (prb)<\/p>",
