PPP uncovers another case of 'electoral fraud'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The United Development Party (PPP) claimed
\nyesterday it had uncovered another conspiracy to ensure that
\nGolkar would win a landslide election victory.<\/p>\n
PPP secretary-general Tosari Wijaya said the Communication
\nForum for Golkar-affiliated Islamic Mass Organizations was behind
\nthe conspiracy.<\/p>\n
\"The forum's central executive board has ordered its branch
\noffices across the country to give food and money to people so
\nthey vote for Golkar,\" Tosari said.<\/p>\n
He said the forum's executives had sent letters to its
\nprovincial offices, telling them to conduct \"dawn operations\" on
\nMay 29, hours before people go to polling stations.<\/p>\n
Quoting a copy of one of the letters, Tosari said the
\noperations would mostly happen in villages and subdistricts where
\nGolkar had lost seats in the 1992 election.<\/p>\n
The operations would be held at about five a.m. after Moslems
\nhad said their dawn prayers, Tosari said. The forum had asked the
\nMoslem organizations to coordinate with local bureaucrats and
\nmilitary officials to make operations successful.<\/p>\n
This was the PPP's third accusation of electoral fraud in the
\nlast fortnight. Last week, party chief Ismail Hasan Metareum
\naccused a subdistrict head in Bengkulu of predetermining local
\nelection results.<\/p>\n
Ismail quoted a leaked document that said Golkar
\nhad won 86.29 percent of the vote in the subdistrict, PPP 7
\npercent and the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) 6.71 percent.<\/p>\n
Minister of Home Affairs Moch. Yogie S.M. denied Monday that
\nthe Bengkulu bureaucrat had predetermined poll results. He said
\nthe document only contained the subdistrict chief's estimate of
\nlocal election results.<\/p>\n
Tosari has said there had been a similar poll-rigging attempt
\nin Pelita village, Tanjung Karang mayoralty, Lampung.<\/p>\n
The village chief has issued a \"projection\" of this year's
\nelection, in which Golkar will win 92.5 percent, PPP 5.09 percent
\nand PDI 2.41 percent.<\/p>\n
On the dawn operations, PPP deputy secretary-general Bachtiar
\nChamsyah said the Golkar-affiliated forum had violated election
\ncampaign regulations.<\/p>\n
\"The law says no political activity is allowed on election
\nday,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The PPP also complained yesterday that the Lampung provincial
\ngovernment had appointed Bandar Lampung mayoralty bureaucrats to
\noversee Golkar's local election strategy.<\/p>\n
Tosari said the PPP Bandar Lampung branch had lodged a
\ncomplaint with the local government over the appointments.<\/p>\n
\"We have demanded the minister of home affairs stop assigning
\ncivil servants to help Golkar win the general election in their
\nrespective areas,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"It is meant to prevent them from promoting their own or
\nGolkar's vested interests,\" he added. (imn)<\/p>",
