PPP to help kick off campaign's first day<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Millions of supporters of the United Development
\nParty (PPP) are expected to enliven the first day of campaigning
\nin the city, along with supporters of nine other parties
\ncontesting the June 7 general election.<\/p>\n
Other major parties, including the National Awakening Party
\n(PKB), the National Mandate Party (PAN) and the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), will take their
\nturns campaigning in the city in the following days.<\/p>\n
The ruling Golkar Party will get its first opportunity to
\ncampaign in Jakarta on the last day of the first round of
\ncampaigning.<\/p>\n
The campaign schedule (see table below) for the 48 parties
\ncontesting the polls was announced on Wednesday by the chairman
\nof the Jakarta Provincial Elections Committee (PPD I), Djafar
\nBadjebe, at City Hall.<\/p>\n
\"It's the final schedule,\" Djafar, who is also the chairman of
\nPPP's Jakarta chapter, said.<\/p>\n
As reported earlier, the 17-day campaign period in the capital
\nwill begin on May 19 with a city-wide parade of the 48 parties'
\nflags and the official raising of the flags at 108 spots
\nthroughout the city.<\/p>\n
The campaign period has been divided into three rounds lasting
\nfive days each. Campaigning will begin on May 20, and each day of
\ncampaigning will feature either nine or 10 parties.<\/p>\n
According to Djafar, parties designated to campaign on the
\nsame day have been urged to discuss the schedules of their
\ncampaign activities.<\/p>\n
That is why the campaign sites and the times of the campaign
\nwill be announced by the parties, he said.<\/p>\n
Unlike in previous polls, the authorities have banned street
\nrallies. Campaign rallies should only take place in open fields
\nor buildings. However, many people worry street rallies, which
\noften end in violence, cannot be avoided.<\/p>\n
In order to minimize the possibility of clashes among party
\nsupporters, PPD I designed the campaign schedule so major parties
\nwould not campaign on the same day.<\/p>\n
On the second day of campaigning, the PKB will campaign along
\nwith eight other parties, including the Justice and Unity Party
\n(PKP).<\/p>\n
On day three of the campaign, PAN will share the city with
\nnine other parties, including the Crescent Star Party (PBB) and
\nthe Justice Party.<\/p>\n
On day four, the city is expected to turn red with millions of
\nsupporters of PDI Perjuangan coming out to support their party.<\/p>\n
According to Djafar, the campaign schedule was jointly formed
\nduring a meeting with representatives of the 48 parties.<\/p>\n
He said it also was agreed on at the meeting to cancel the
\nplan to campaign at the provincial level.<\/p>\n
\"We have decided campaign activities will only be held at the
\nsubdistrict, district and mayoralty levels because we consider
\ncampaigning at the provincial level too broad and could easily
\nspark clashes among party supporters,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Canceling campaigning at the provincial level means, for
\nexample, party members from East Jakarta would not be allowed to
\nhold campaign rallies outside of East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
There also will be security officials and security task forces
\nfrom the parties who will help ensure campaign rules are adhered
\nto, Djafar said.<\/p>\n
He said even though the schedule was considered final, it
\nstill could be changed.<\/p>\n
\"Political parties are still given the opportunity to change
\ndays with other parties as long as they can agree with each
\nother. Also, they should first report to PPD I,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Parties will be allowed to campaign from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00
\np.m.<\/p>\n
Djafar said if any parties were proved to have caused chaos,
\nthey would be punished under the General Elections Commission's
\ndecree No.13\/1999.<\/p>\n
The decree stipulates the rules for campaign activities and
\nthe sanctions to be imposed on parties which violate the rules.<\/p>\n
\"It could go as far as the disqualification of the guilty
