PPP predicts Indonesia is stable this year<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Moslem-oriented United Development Party
\n(PPP) predicts that Indonesian politics will be "stable and calm"
\nthis year, in contrast to the rather turbulent 1994.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters at the party's headquarters here
\nyesterday, PPP chairman Ismail Hasan Metareum said he was
\nconvinced that 1995 would be a year of political stability for
\nall political groups in the country, including PPP.<\/p>\n
"Unlike the predictions of political forecasters who say this
\nwill be a year of political turmoil, we believe that everything
\nwill be more stable," he said.<\/p>\n
PPP has observed that government officials now seem to be more
\nunited in their vision and actions, Ismail said.<\/p>\n
He added that if there is any political tension this year, it
\nwill most likely not be enough to pose a threat to national
\nstability.<\/p>\n
Commenting on Golkar, the ruling political organization,
\nIsmail said that there currently did not seem to be any sign of
\ninternal conflict, although minor rifts could occur. "Which is
\nquite normal in any organization," he added.<\/p>\n
He also predicted that the Armed Forces (ABRI) would be
\n"calmer" and "more stable" this year. If any shuffling takes
\nplace in terms of personnel, he said, it will be part of their
\nroutine tour of duty.<\/p>\n
It seemed that PPP itself, he said, would have good relations
\nwith ABRI and also become more stable this year.<\/p>\n
Ismail suggested that the party's Third National Congress last
\nAugust, which re-elected him as chairman, served as a solid
\nfoundation to carry on the activities for this year.<\/p>\n
"The congress ran democratically and all participants played
\nstrictly by the rules. We hope this success will be repeated at
\nthe regional party congresses to start this month," he said.<\/p>\n
PPP members, who are celebrating the party's 22nd anniversary
\ntoday, will be holding their provincial and regional branch
\nmeetings all year.<\/p>\n
The first branch to hold the meeting will be Central Java --
\nthe "calm" chapter according to Ismail -- starting next Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The meetings, among others, are being held to elect
\nsubdistrict commissioners of the party.<\/p>\n
On economics, PPP member Bachtiar Hamzah said the party would
\nfully support the government's plan to cut down foreign loans and
\naccelerate the payment of foreign debts.<\/p>\n
"We also support the listing of state firms on the
\ninternational stock market," he said, citing that sales of 20
\npercent to 25 percent of a company's stocks could help to bring
\nan additional US$20 to 30 billion into the country.<\/p>\n
To commemorate its anniversary this year, PPP will inaugurate
\nseveral mosques and centers of Koranic studies.(pwn)<\/p>",
