PPP faces another crisis in E. Kalimantan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Moslem-based United Development Party (PPP)
\nis facing yet another leadership crisis as the East Kalimantan
\nbranch's congress failed to elect new leaders.<\/p>\n
The three-day meeting succeeded in establishing a five-member
\nelectoral team but failed to meet the Tuesday deadline for the
\nelection of new leaders for the next five-year period. This was
\ndespite the local police office's decision to extend the permit
\nfor holding the gathering for several extra hours.<\/p>\n
After the electoral process came to deadlock, the team
\nresigned and asked the central executive board in Jakarta to
\nelect the local leadership.<\/p>\n
\"The electoral committee has failed to reach agreement and to
\nelect new leaders, so now it's handing the matter to the central
\nexecutive board,\" spokesman Ridwan Suwidi was quoted by the
\nAntara news agency as saying yesterday in Samarinda, the capital
\nof East Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
Besides East Kalimantan, three other regional branches of the
\nparty--Jakarta, South Sumatra and East Java--have experienced
\nsimilar problems. In the Jakarta branch, in particular,
\ndissension has grown after an electoral committee failed to
\ndetermine the new leadership.<\/p>\n
PPP deputy chairman Yusuf Syakir closed the meeting expressing
\nhis concern over the situation. \"We accept with sadness your
\ndecision to hand over the authority to establish the new branch
\nleadership (to the central executive board),\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"However, I am confident that the central executive board will
\nbe able to resolve all of the problems concerning East Kalimantan
\nbranch leadership in a very short time,\" he said.<\/p>\n
On June 23, leaders from 21 provincial branches of the party
\nwill meet and are expected to also discuss the problems now
\nbesetting East Kalimantan and other branches.<\/p>\n
The party leaders have set Aug. 31 as the deadline for all
\nregional branches to hold their congresses and elect new leaders
\nfor the next five years.<\/p>\n
Yusuf called on the members and supporters of the PPP in the
\nregion not to be upset over the glitch and to remain united.
\n\"Hopefully we'll be able to establish the new regional leadership
\nof the PPP later this month,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The PPP is currently in the process of consolidating the
\norganization following its national congress last August which
\nsaw the re-election of Ismail Hasan for another five-year term.<\/p>\n
In the Jakarta branch, the electoral committee's failure to
\nappoint new leaders in February resulted in the establishment of
\na rival board. The central executive board intervened by
\nappointing Rusjdi Hamka as the new branch leader, but Arifin
\nArbain insisted that he was the rightful leader, although he was
\nelected by an extraordinary meeting.<\/p>\n
The party leaders have yet to settle the problem of the dual
\nleadership in the Jakarta chapter. Rusjdi Hamka, meanwhile, is
\nfacing his own problems as a leading member of the Muhammadiyah
\norganization, which forbids its members to hold positions in
\nother organizations.<\/p>\n
In North Sumatra, a rift emerged even before elections were
\nheld when two groups of activists tried to hold separate
