PPP backs ABRI governor<\/p>\n
Samarinda, East Kalimantan: The provincial branch of the
\nUnited Development Party (PPP) has announced it will only support
\nan active-duty Armed Forces (ABRI) gubernatorial candidate.<\/p>\n
\"Based on the thousands of letters we have received and
\nvarious consultations we have conducted ... we have decided to
\nsupport a gubernatorial candidate for the 1998\/2003 period who
\ncomes from an active Armed Forces background,\" said PPP
\nprovincial chief Ridwan Suwidi, as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
\"If there are no active Armed Forces members out of the three
\nor five candidates forwarded by the provincial legislature to the
\nminister of home affairs, then PPP won't vote,\" he warned.<\/p>\n
He shrugged off suggestions that the faction's position was
\ntaken under \"external\" pressure.<\/p>\n
No, this is based on our consultations and the qualities which
\nan Armed Forces member can have, he explained.<\/p>\n
The names of the candidates will forwarded to Jakarta later
