PPI culls names from legislative list<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Some 3,500 names were dropped from the final
\nprovincial legislative list which previously contained some
\n13,500 candidates, due to failures in completing required
\ndocuments and a number of violations found, National Elections
\nCommittee (PPI) chairman Jacob Tobing said Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"It is estimated that there will be only about 10,000
\ncandidates,\" Jacob said.<\/p>\n
The committee completed on Wednesday the final list of
\nlegislative candidates. However, after rechecking the list on
\nWednesday night before distributing lists on diskettes to the
\nmedia, some mistakes were discovered, he said.<\/p>\n
As of Thursday night, the lists had yet to be given to the
\nmedia as previously scheduled.<\/p>\n
Jacob said a number of candidates were dropped because of
\nstrong objections including from themselves; some said they did
\nnot know and did not approve of their nomination. The committee
\nfound others had not completed required documents.<\/p>\n
\"For instance the Indonesian Democratic Union Party (PUDI)
\nstill submitted the names of Kemal Idris and Ali Sadikin, while
\nboth rejected the nomination,\" Jacob said.<\/p>\n
Kemal Idris and Ali Sadikin are members of Barisan National or
\nNational Front, an opposition group comprising several retired
\ngenerals and government officials.<\/p>\n
\"Some of the candidates also failed to submit voters
\nregistration note,\" Jacob added.<\/p>\n
The delay in the announcement of both temporary and final
\nprovincial legislative lists is due to limited time and work
\nforce, Jacob explained.<\/p>\n
\"The officials stayed up late for weeks. So I think it's
\nbetter to be a bit late but perfect,\" Jacob, also a
\nrepresentative for PDI Perjuangan, said.<\/p>\n
Jacob acknowledged that the committee had \"neglected\" setting
\na time frame for parties to raise objections in accordance with
\nthe elections law.<\/p>\n
A request for more time from the General Election Commission
\n(KPU) was not granted given the short time ahead of the June 7
\npoll, he said.<\/p>\n
As a result, only two days were allowed for both parties and
\nthe public to challenge the listing. In the earlier set schedule,
\nthere were six days to raise objections, from May 12 until a day
\nbefore the temporary list was issued on May 18.<\/p>\n
Most changes from the temporary list to final lists involved
\ncandidates from the three established parties -- the United
\nDevelopment Party (PPP), the Golkar Party and the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), he said.<\/p>\n
\"But most of the candidates who were dropped were from new
\nparties,\" Jacob added.<\/p>\n
Separately in Jambi, Antara reported the ruling party Golkar
\ntopped the list of legislative candidates with 77 names, followed
\nby the United Development Party (PPP) and the National Awakening
\nParty (PKB) with 54 and 45 names, respectively.<\/p>\n
The Crescent Star Party (PBB) and the National Mandate Party
\n(PAN) followed with 38 and 37 candidates separately. (edt)<\/p>",
