PPI confident vote count completed by Wednesday<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The National Elections Committee (PPI) is
\nexpected to complete the national vote count of the June 7
\ngeneral election on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
As of Tuesday, the PPI had finished the vote count in 24
\nprovinces and 108 overseas polling places. Outstanding ballots
\noriginated from Bengkulu and North and Southeast Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
\"We'll continue counting the ballots tomorrow (Wednesday)
\nafternoon and give officials of the three provincial elections
\ncommittees an opportunity to prepare their official poll
\ndocuments,\" PPI deputy chairman Djuhad Mahja said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Djuhad, who presided over a Tuesday plenary session, said the
\nfinal day of the vote count would start at 1 p.m.<\/p>\n
He said the PPI was committed to announcing the national tally
\nbefore the July 21 deadline.<\/p>\n
Tuesday saw the completion of the vote count in Central
\nSulawesi, West Sumatra and West Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
Provisional poll results revealed that Golkar and the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) won in
\n11 provinces each.<\/p>\n
Golkar topped the vote count in Riau, Jambi, Irian Jaya, East
\nTimor, West Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, South Sulawesi, East Nusa
\nTenggara, Central Sulawesi, West Sumatra and West Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
PDI Perjuangan reigned supreme in Bali, Yogyakarta, Central
\nJava, Lampung, Central and East Kalimantan, South Sumatra,
\nJakarta, North Sumatra, Central Kalimantan and West Java.<\/p>\n
The United Development Party (PPP) and the National Awakening
\nParty (PKB) triumphed in Aceh and East Java respectively.<\/p>\n
Djuhad said, however, the PPI still needed to verify a report
\nof 146 invalid ballots found by the Donggala Regency Elections
\nCommittee in Central Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
A verification team composed of PPI officials, the Central
\nSulawesi Provincial Elections Committee, the Donggala Regency
\nElections Committee and the official Elections Supervisory
\nCommittee assessed on Tuesday the Donggala elections committee
\nclaim. The team agreed that all ballots from the regency, which
\nreportedly were not punched but contained thumbprints, must be
\ndelivered to the PPI as evidence by July 19.<\/p>\n
The invalid ballots were in favor of Golkar.<\/p>\n
\"If it's true that the 146 ballots were stamped with the
\nvoters' thumbprints, they are automatically invalid,\" said Adhi
\nS., an official of the government-sanctioned poll watchdog.<\/p>\n
He said the supervisory committee would not hesitate to take
\nfirm actions against any parties found violating the election
\nrules.<\/p>\n
\"In a meeting of the verification team this afternoon, we
\ndiscussed the possibility of reducing any errant party's votes by
\n20 percent,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a planned meeting between General Elections
\nCommission (KPU) chairman Rudini and Minister of Home Affairs
\nSyarwan Hamid was moved back to Wednesday because Syarwan was out
\nof town.<\/p>\n
Rudini said he would channel objections raised by some KPU
\nmembers over a government regulation which allows the elections
\nsupervisory committee to validate the poll results, despite being
\nrejected by the majority of the KPU representatives. The ruling,
\nissued in May, orders parties objecting to the poll results to
\nmake an appeal within a week of the announcement of the national
