PPD I orders background check on councilors<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Jakarta Provincial Elections Committee (PPD
\nI) will reexamine documents supplied by the 76 city councilor
\ncandidates to establish whether they are Jakarta residents, a
\ncommittee executive said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Head of the committee's program division Muchamad Taufik said
\npolitical parties who had gained city council seats must replace
\nlegislative candidates who were not Jakarta residents.<\/p>\n
\"If we find that their KTP (identification cards) submitted to
\nus are fake, they can be charged for having committed a crime,\"
\nhe told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Taufik said that based on the Election Law, candidates for
\nprovincial legislative councils must reside in the province where
\nthey are nominated.<\/p>\n
The regulation, however, was not directed toward legislative
\ncandidates in the national legislature or those representing the
\nIndonesian Military (TNI), he said.<\/p>\n
In addition to checking the identification cards, PPD I would
\nalso perform a background check on the councilors' diplomas,
\nmedical records. Their financial assets will also be audited.<\/p>\n
Taufik said the verification process would take place this
\nweek. He did not indicate when the assessment would be completed
\nor whether the results would be publicly announced.<\/p>\n
He said there were no changes in the configuration of seats
\nfor the city council, even though three stembus akoord (or
\nagreements on the pooling of leftover votes), had been annulled
\nby the General Elections Commission (KPU).<\/p>\n
KPU has acknowledged two stembus akoord agreements; one among
\neight Muslim parties and another between the Love the Nation
\nDemocratic Party (PDKB), the Indonesian Unity in Diversity Party
\n(PBI) and the Indonesian Democrats Alliance Party (PADI).<\/p>\n
No loose<\/p>\n
Taufik said the Justice and Unity Party (PKP) would not loose
\nits one seat previously gained through the leftover votes pooling
\nmechanism.<\/p>\n
\"Even though the PKP's stembus akoord agreement with six other
\nparties was not acknowledged by the KPU, the party could still
\ngain the seat, because its leftover votes were enough for the
\nseat,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Voting results in the city showed the Indonesian Democratic
\nParty of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) would grab 29 of the 76 city
\ncouncil seats. Also taking seats on the council will be the
\nUnited Development Party (PPP) (13 seats), the National Mandate
\nParty (PAN) (13 seats), the Golkar Party (7), the Justice Party
\n(PK) (3), the National Awakening Party (PKB) (2) and the Crescent
\nStar Party (PBB) (1).<\/p>\n
Another two parties, the United Party (PP), and the Indonesian
\nUnity in Diversity Party (PBI), will each gain one seat each.<\/p>\n
Taufik said PPD I had yet to decide whether two seats gained
\nthrough the leftover votes pooling agreement among the Muslim
\nparties would go directly to the Justice Party (PK), which gained
\nthe biggest share of the vote.<\/p>\n
\"Another one seat can go to the Crescent Star Party (PBB),
\nwhich gained the second largest share of the vote, because there
\nwas another internal agreement that the total seats gained
\nthrough the stembus akoord should not all be allocated to the
\nparty with the most votes,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the electoral committee had allowed the Muslim parties
\ntwo to three days to resolve the issue.<\/p>\n
There are 85 seats on the council, nine of which are allocated
\nto TNI.(ind)<\/p>",
