Power tariff hike delayed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Mines and Energy Kuntoro
\nMangksubroto has delayed for an unspecified amount of time the
\nplanned hike in power prices, which was scheduled for this month.<\/p>\n
Ministry spokesman Budhi Sulistyo said on Friday that the
\naction was taken in view of the economic difficulties faced by
\nthe public during the economic crisis.<\/p>\n
The government, however, will raise by 20 percent the price of
\npower for luxury houses, starting with next month's bills.<\/p>\n
The government was aware that the action would affect state
\nelectricity company Perusahaan Listrik Negara's ability to
\nprovide power to the public, Budhi said.<\/p>\n
But the government will continue supporting the company with
\nsubsidies.<\/p>\n
\"However, the subsidies will be systematically and gradually
\nphased out so that the government can allocate the money to other
\nsectors which are more in need of it,\" Budhi said. (jsk)<\/p>",
