Poultry demand drives RI's soymeal imports<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (Reuters): Growing local demand, partly driven by
\nrising poultry feed consumption, will boost Indonesia's soymeal
\nand soybean imports, creating a need to expand grain handling
\nfacilities, Indonesian industry sources said.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia's growing demand for both soybeans and soymeal have
\nto depend on imports,\" said a source at a leading commodity
\ntrading firm in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"Soon, I predict the vessels coming into Indonesia will be
\nminimal panamax size to cape size. Therefore, in my opinion it
\nwould be profitable to invest in a terminal grain handling
\ncomplex in Indonesia,\" the source told a recent American Soybean
\nAssociation buyers meeting in Thailand.<\/p>\n
Indonesia traditionally has been a strong buyer of Indian
\nsoymeal because of a freight advantage and small shipments, which
\nIndonesian buyers found easy to finance.<\/p>\n
But recently, Indonesia has stepped up U.S. soymeal and food
\nsoybean purchases because of credit guarantees.<\/p>\n
\"With the expectation of an influx in imports, it is
\nimperative for any company to be efficient in terms of shipping,
\nhandling and storing of these commodities,\" the source said.<\/p>\n
Poultry feed in Indonesia, with a population of 210 million
\npeople, accounts for the bulk of the country's feed production.<\/p>\n
Imported feed ingredients constitute 50 to 60 percent of the
\nformulation of animal feed.<\/p>\n
\"Although Indonesia is grappling with the worst economic
\ncrisis in decades, it has recovered more than half of its losses
\nin feed output as city dwellers eat more poultry after switching
\nto cheaper options earlier in the crisis,\" the source said.<\/p>",
