Potted plants will 'replace' vendors<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration has ordered 120 traders
\noperating along Jl. Matraman Raya in Jatinegara to leave the area
\nas of Jan. 18, despite their appeal to remain until the upcoming
\nIdul Fitri holiday.<\/p>\n
Zamris D, head of the East Jakarta Law and Order office, said
\nEast Jakarta Mayor H. Sudarsono had instructed him to expel the
\ntraders from the area who continue to cause traffic jams.<\/p>\n
Once the traders are gone, the mayoralty plans to put potted
\nplants along the sidewalks.<\/p>\n
Zamris made the statement when he received a delegation
\nrepresenting the 120 traders that demanded permission to operate
\nin the areas until Idul Fitri, the Antara news agency reported.<\/p>\n
He promised to help solve their problems by moving them to a
\nnumber of market sites throughout the East Jakarta mayoralty.<\/p>\n
The mayoralty also received similar complaints from traders
\nfrom Pulogadung and Cililitan, who turned down the mayoralty's
\nplans to expel them.<\/p>\n
\"We will not hesitate to take stern measures against those who
\nrefuse to move away,\" Zamris said, adding that the removal of the
\ntraders was part of the city administration's law enforcement
\nefforts.<\/p>\n
Responding to Zamris's explanation, members of the delegation
\nvoiced their plans to hold the city administration to its promise
\nof placing the traders in selected markets.<\/p>\n
\"The sooner the better. We want to start trading in the new
\nplaces so as not to suffer great losses,\" said Ujang, head of the
\ndelegation.<\/p>\n
Hatta, another trader, urged his colleagues to abide by the
\ncity regulation. \"This is very positive, because the city
\nadministration intends to help us search for a way out,\" he
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Another delegation representing the traders also went to the
\noffice of the National Commission on Human Rights on Thursday to
\ncomplain about the expulsion plan.<\/p>\n
In response to the complaint, the commission urged the
\nmayoralty to be humane in settling the dispute with the sidewalk
