Posthumous award granted to Lopa<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Megawati Soekarnoputri granted the
\nsecond highest state medal Mahaputra Adiprana posthumously to the
\nlate attorney general Baharuddin Lopa on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The award was handed over in a ceremony at the State Palace,
\nby the President to Lopa's widow Indrawulan, who appeared honored
\nupon receiving the medal.<\/p>\n
\"I am very pleased as this is the visible proof that the
\ngovernment really respects bapak (her late husband). I thank you
\nfor the honor,\" Indrawulan said after the ceremony.<\/p>\n
Lopa held the post of attorney general for less than one month
\nduring former president Abdurrahman Wahid's tenure before he
\nsuffered a heart attack and died.<\/p>\n
Despite his brief tenure, he was known for his honesty and
\nintegrity as well as tenacity in dealing with major corruption
\nand human rights abuse cases.<\/p>\n
Megawati installed the new Attorney General M.A. Rachman later
\nin the day.<\/p>\n
The President also presented the Mahaputra Pratama award to
\nMochamad Achmad Sahjamuni, a prominent intelligence officer
\nduring the Dutch occupation from 1948 to 1949 and the Mahaputra
\nNararya medal to Indonesian language expert J.S.Badudu.<\/p>\n
Three Jasa Utama medals were awarded to Piet Wiryawan
\nAdimangkurat, Oemi Hani'in Soeseno and Radjab Semendawai.<\/p>\n
Two Muslim figures Abdullah Abbas and Rusyad Nurdin also
\nreceived the Jasa Utama medals, but the two did not attend the
\nceremony due to poor health.<\/p>\n
The medals of honor were presented in conjunction with the
\n57th Independence Day celebration on Aug. 17.<\/p>\n
As part of the celebration, the President is scheduled to
\ndeliver her first official address to the nation on Thursday
\nmorning at the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
Most Cabinet ministers attended the medal presentation
\nceremony with former foreign minister during president Sukarno's
\ntenure, Ruslan Abdul Gani seen among the guests.<\/p>\n
Megawati, took a moment to talk to Ruslan after the award
