Postal firm to lease aircraft<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): To enhance service and performance in the face
\nof competition from private companies, the state-owned postal
\nservice, Perusahaan Umum Pos dan Giro (PPG), will begin operating
\nleased aircraft by the end of this year.<\/p>\n
PPG's president, Marsoedi, told reporters after a workshop for
\njournalists here yesterday that a feasibility study for the
\noperation will be completed next month.<\/p>\n
\"This program is aimed at improving our services to the
\npublic. Trial operations will likely be conducted for the
\nJakarta-Medan (North Sumatra) route,\" he said. He did not provide
\nfurther details on the plan.<\/p>\n
Minister of Tourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave said
\nrecently that PPG should take measures to improve postal
\nservices.<\/p>\n
Marsoedi said yesterday that his company often faces
\ndifficulties delivering letters and packages to hard-to-reach
\nareas, particularly those in the eastern provinces.<\/p>\n
A PPG executive said the company may lease CN-235 aircraft
\nfrom Merpati Nusantara Airlines, a subsidiary of the country's
\nflag carrier, Garuda Indonesia, to improve services to rural
\nareas.<\/p>\n
Merpati currently operates only eight of its 14 CN-235
\naircraft, he said.<\/p>\n
Marsoedi said PPG is also seeking cooperation with other
\nparties to improve its postal services.<\/p>\n
\"We have made several deals with private companies and banks,
\nincluding those from Germany and Australia, to establish special
\nservices, both for the public and for businesses,\" he said.<\/p>\n
PPG and the Australian Postal Corporation (APC) signed an
\nagreement on management in April to create a better image for the
