Possible attack anticipated<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya (JP): Provincial security authorities
\nhave beefed up security around the compound of giant copper and
\ngold mining company PT Freeport Indonesia in Timika district
\nfollowing a threat of an armed attack here on Aug. 1.<\/p>\n
Aug. 1 is also the anniversary of the establishment of the
\nTrikora Military Command overseeing Irian Jaya province.<\/p>\n
Both Trikora Military Commander Maj. Gen. Mahidin Simbolon and
\nIrian Jaya Police chief Insp. Gen. I Made Mangku Pastika stated
\non Wednesday their readiness to repel an attack.<\/p>\n
Both commanders said that a number of police and military
\npersonnel from the police's Mobile Brigade and Army's Strategic
\nReserves Command (Kostrad) along with other security task forces
\nhad been stationed in the Freeport compound.<\/p>\n
\"PT Freeport is a vital project that is closely related to our
\nnation's image in the international community. I think the
\nexisting personnel will be enough to secure the area,\" Made
\nMangku said after a handover ceremony of the post of Irian Jaya
\nnaval base commander from Brig. Gen. Yusuf Solichin to Col.
\nJoseph Sutrasman.<\/p>\n
Mimika Military District chief Lt. Col. Jamaluddin separately
\nsaid that his office was monitoring security developments in the
\nregency.<\/p>\n
Jamaluddin said that the two areas in Timika that needed close
\nobservation were Banti and Tsinga, where Free Papua Movement
