Poso Police chief replaced after attack<\/p>\n

The Poso Police chief was removed from his post on Thursday
\nfollowing the beheading of three schoolgirls and the shooting of
\ntwo others in the regency recently.<\/p>\n
Adj. Sr. Comr. M. Sholeh Hidayat handed over the reins on
\nThursday to Adj. Sr. Comr. Rudy Supahriadi, who previously served
\nas deputy chief of the bomb squad at National Police
\nHeadquarters. It was unclear where Sholeh will be posted
\nfollowing his replacement.<\/p>\n
The handover ceremony was held at Central Sulawesi Police
\nHeadquarters and was presided over by Central Sulawesi Police
\nchief Sr. Comr. Oegroseno.<\/p>\n
In his speech, Oegroseno denied the replacement had anything
\nto do with the two incidents.<\/p>\n
\"The replacement is nothing more than a regular change of
\nguard,\" Oegroseno was quoted as saying by Antara.<\/p>\n
National Police chief Gen. Sutanto met with local religious
\nfigures shortly after the beheadings of three Christian girls.
\nThe religious leaders had demanded a reshuffle of the police
\nleadership in the area.<\/p>\n
Sholeh, who only assumed his post six months ago, lost his job
\nonly two days after an unknown assailant shot a Muslim girl and a
\nChristian girl on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
In this latest incident, the two girls were sitting in front
\nof a house here when the man fired on them before fleeing as a
\npillion passenger on a motorcycle. The two were seriously wounded
\nand are now being treated in a Poso hospital. The attacks are
\nsimilar to other shootings in the province over recent years.<\/p>\n
The Army arrested and are questioning a man believed to be the
\nshooter's driver. The gunman is still at large.<\/p>\n
Two weeks ago, a group of five men beheaded three Christian
\ngirls in the Bukit Bambu area, sparking a national outcry. Many
\nfeared it would spark renewed sectarian disturbances in the
\nvolatile regency.<\/p>\n
Poso turned into a battleground between Muslims and Christians
\nin 2000, with more than 2,000 people thought to have lost their
\nlives and hundreds of buildings destroyed.<\/p>\n
Separately in Jakarta, national police deputy spokesman Brig.
\nGen. Soenarko confirmed the replacement, saying that it had been
\nplanned some time ago.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, National Police Headquarters spokesman Insp. Gen.
\nAryanto Budihardjo told reporters that police investigating the
\nPoso shooting had recovered a number of spent bullets from a 38-
\nmm revolver. The police had also found six live bullets and a
\njacket left at the scene of the crime.<\/p>",
