Poso Muslims visit Christian base<\/p>\n
PALU, Central Sulawesi: At least 100 Muslim residents from
\nvarious parts of Poso regency visited on Wednesday afternoon
\nChristian communities in Tentena, North Pamona district.<\/p>\n
The visit by Poso Muslims, grouped under the Association of
\nPoso Muslim Families (FKKMP), aims to forge peace and harmony
\nbetween the two religions in the aftermath of a sectarian
\nconflict that rocked the area for two years since 2000.<\/p>\n
At least 2,000 Muslims and Christians were killed in the
\nbitter conflict, which was partially resolved after a government-
\nsponsored peace pact drawn up in 2002, but sporadic attacks
\nagainst both sides have occurred in recent months.<\/p>\n
FKKMP chairman Burhan S. Adu said the people of Poso, despite
\ntheir differences in faith, were of the same culture, tradition,
\nhistory, language and ancestry.<\/p>\n
These united values would be nurtured again to prevent
\nhorizontal conflicts from pitting one group against the other, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Many Christians living in predominantly Muslim areas took
\nrefuge in Tentena, while Muslims in Christian areas fled to Poso
\ntown during the conflict.<\/p>\n
Despite the relatively calm situation in Poso regency,
\nunrestricted travel and the lifting of its state of civil
\nemergency, not all refugees had returned to their homes. -- JP<\/p>",
