Poso and national vigilance<\/p>\n
The outbreak of violence in Poso, Central Sulawesi, on Oct. 9
\nand Oct.12, in which 10 people in three villages were killed, is
\nindeed deplorable and represents a challenge to the nation to
\nmanage the country with greater justice, transparency,
\naccountability and democracy.<\/p>\n
This strife may have been due, first, to the fallout from a
\npower struggle between members of local elites; second, the
\nemergence of social and political grudges arising from the
\ncommunal conflict almost five years ago; third, the presence of
\ncertain parties trying to provoke and benefit from local unrest;
\nfourth, the maneuverings of international terrorist networks via
\ntheir Poso operatives.<\/p>\n
Rumors are also widespread about the involvement of military
\nand police personnel, as indicated by armed, fast and tactical
\nattacks in the incident. Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for
\nPolitical and Security Affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono affirmed
\nthat the attacks had been perpetrated by "old faces"
\ncollaborating with new ones. Army chief Gen. Endriartono Sutarto
\nsaid no military arms were found, therefore no soldiers were
\ninvolved.<\/p>\n
What we need now is national vigilance to face the big
\nchallenge of maintaining national unity and integrity. Therefore,
\nit is not only necessary to resolve conflict in Poso, Aceh and
\nPapua, but also important to create security, uphold the law,
\ncarry out social rehabilitation, reconstruct the national economy
\nand achieve reconciliation.<\/p>\n
