Pos Indonesia on tariffs increase<\/p>\n

In response to letters sent to this newspaper (Aug. 2) by
\nseveral users of state-owned postal company PT Pos Indonesia
\nservices, we would like first to thank you for your suggestions
\nand input and then to say that the increase in tariffs of postal
\nconsignments abroad is also experienced by all others relying on
\nthe services provided by PT Pos Indonesia in their correspondence
\nwith overseas parties.<\/p>\n
The present economic crisis has led to a higher cost of
\nproduction in the manufacturing and services sectors, a situation
\nPT Pos Indonesia cannot extricate itself from, particularly in
\nits overseas consignment services. The components of operational
\ncosts in this respect, such as overseas handling of the packages,
\nhandling at the airports of origin and destination and transit,
\nare calculated and paid in international currencies.<\/p>\n
The weakening of rupiah against foreign currencies has
\nresulted in increases in the value of operational costs. Besides,
\ndomestic handling of postal packages has also undergone a rise.
\nAs a result, PT Pos Indonesia has to spend greater amounts of
\nmoney to cover operational costs incurred in domestic and
\noverseas consignment.<\/p>\n
Despite this unfavorable condition, PT Pos Indonesia continues
\nto maintain low tariffs, especially with respect to general
\nletters, aerograms and postcards sent domestically and abroad
\n(sea mail). It should be understood, however, that sea mail takes
\na relatively longer time than airmail.<\/p>\n
So, the tariff increases, which became effective as from July
\n1, 1998, are intended solely to cover operational costs through
\nair transportation and to ensure that service users will continue
\nto enjoy speedy and reliable services. If the weight categories
\nand countries of destination are considered on average, the real
\ntariff increase is only 629 percent.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the report in this newspaper of July 9, 1998,
\nOverseas postal tariff up by 90 percent, is correct. This report
\nis concerned with the Express Mail Service (EMS), a service
\nprovided for the dispatch of documents and merchandise abroad.
\nThe EMS tariff has undergone only a small increase because it is
\nintended to facilitate the flow of export goods.<\/p>\n
However, in view of the economic difficulty now being
\nconfronted, and with a view to maintaining the public trust, PT
\nPos Indonesia can always revise the tariffs in the future.<\/p>\n
