Portuguese returns 'home'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Portuguese aristocrat Dom Duarte Braganca has
\nexpressed hope that videotapes of East Timor which he took during
\nhis visit there recently would make his people understand the
\nactual situation in the territory.<\/p>\n
\"I have made a film and it will be shown on Portuguese TV,\"
\nDom Duarte told reporters before attending a banquet hosted by
\nIndonesian Ambassador-at-Large for East Timor Affairs Lopez da
\nCruz here Thursday.<\/p>\n
He said the film would counter the negative portrayals of East
\nTimor usually found in Portugal.<\/p>\n
Duarte, who arrived here on Nov. 11 and included East Timor
\nand Yogyakarta in his itinerary, said his visit was mainly a
\nnostalgic trip and not a political one, since he did not hold any
\nofficial role in the Portuguese government. He left Jakarta for
\nLisbon yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"I visited East Timor in 1974, so it was basically a nostalgic
\ntrip. I wanted to see the country that I like so much. Besides,
\nall my friends are in East Timor,\" he said.<\/p>\n
However, he said he would also relay information about his
\nvisit to high-ranking Portuguese officials.<\/p>\n
Duarte also said he realized there had been much progress in
\nthe area, including advancements in education.<\/p>\n
\"I have seen the enormous effort that the government has made
\nto develop East Timor and this is one of the things Portuguese
\npeople will see in the film,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Former East Timorese governor Mario Viegas Carrascalao said
\nearlier that Portuguese TV station VIK would broadcast Duarte's
\nfilm on the territory's development since integration with
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
Duarte is the son of the former Portuguese king, an old friend
\nof Carrascalao.<\/p>\n
Duarte was here at the invitation of Dili bishop and Nobel
\nPeace laureate, Mgr. Carlos Felipe Ximenes Belo. (10)<\/p>",
