In the exercise facing directly onto\nthe South China Sea, troops are simulating island defence against a mock\ninvasion, firing various weapons, including missiles from the High\nMobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), at targets near the\ncoastline. The annual joint exercise \u201cBalikatan,\u201d or \u201cShoulder to\nShoulder,\u201d running from 20 April to 8 May, is the largest to date in\nterms of participating countries.
