'Poros Indonesia' members could be sacked: Theo<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan) deputy chairman Theo Syafei threatened to dismiss
\nparty members who join splinter group \"Poros Indonesia\" and
\npursue policies contrary to the party.<\/p>\n
\"They could be given warning letters and even fired if their
\nstatements go against party policy,\" Theo announced after a
\nmeeting at the party's headquarters on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He said the party still considered \"Poros Indonesia\"
\n(Indonesia Axis) as only a faction within the party, rejecting
\nthat the group is a breakaway faction of the party.<\/p>\n
\"We don't think that the group is a big problem. A faction
\nwithin a political party is common and a natural phenomenon,\" the
\nretired lieutenant general said.<\/p>\n
He also refuted the group's claim that PDI Perjuangan former
\ntreasurer and former minister of investment and state enterprises
\ndevelopment Laksamana Sukardi had joined the group.<\/p>\n
He said Laksamana earlier pledged to remain loyal to the
\nparty.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Poros Indonesia supporter Mochtar Buchori brushed
\naside Theo's threat, saying the group was founded to uphold
\ndemocratization and to correct irregularities within the party.<\/p>\n
\"If we are dismissed because we are struggling for democracy,
\nit's OK,\" Mochtar, formerly head of the party's research and
\ndevelopment body, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n
He said the group would officially be launched on June 6 to
\ncoincide with the birthday of the country's first president,
\nSukarno.<\/p>\n
He said the group, which was initiated by party legislators
\nMeliono Suwondo and Haryanto Taslam, also included people outside
\nthe party.<\/p>\n
Meliono and Taslam are the party's former deputy treasurer and
\ndeputy secretary-general.<\/p>\n
Film director Eros Djarot, who challenged Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri as party chairperson in a recent congress two
\nmonths ago in Semarang, has also reportedly joined the group.
