Porn defendant walks free<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Central Jakarta District Court acquitted on Thursday
\nthe manager of a movie production house of charges of violating
\nthe law on obscenity.<\/p>\n
George Ivan alias Jos, manager of PT Indocho Rama, stood trial
\nfor producing pornographic videos disguised as a cast screening
\nfor a soap advertisement.<\/p>\n
He was charged with violating Article 282 of the Criminal Code
\nfor publishing pornographic materials which carries a maximum
\nsentence of two years.<\/p>\n
He was also charged with violating Law No.2\/1998 for illegally
\ndistributing film.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Iskandar Tjakke told the courtroom that the
\ndefendant could not be found guilty of publishing pornographic
\nmaterials.<\/p>\n
"In the offense, the defendant merely acted as a style
\ndirector, therefore the charge is invalid," Tjakke said in the
\nverdict.<\/p>\n
Iskandar also said that no witnesses supported the
\nprosecutors' charges.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors, who had sought a six-month jail term for the
\noffense, said they would appeal.<\/p>\n
The pornographic video, which was illegally distributed and
\navailable on the black market, was made on Nov. 29, 2000. Scores
\nof young female models who appeared in the video were initially
\nled to believe that they would be acting in TV commercials and
\nlured with a bogus contract worth Rp 500 million (US$58,000).<\/p>\n
In October, the South Jakarta District Court sentenced photo
\nstudio owner Budi Han to one year in jail for discreetly
\nproducing pornographic video of TV soap opera stars. -- JP<\/p>",
