Istanbul (ANTARA) - Pope Leo XIV has asserted that the war launched\nby the US and Israel against Iran is not a \u2018just war\u2019, arguing that the\nclassical theory is no longer relevant to the realities of modern\nwarfare.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no just war there,\u201d Leo told journalists during a flight\nfrom Rome to Madrid on Saturday, marking his fourth overseas trip as\nPope.<\/p>\n
The comments were made in response to questions from journalists\nregarding claims by US Vice President JD Vance, who utilised the concept\nof a \u2018just war\u2019 to defend Washington\u2019s military actions against\nTehran.<\/p>\n
According to Leo, the philosophical concept of a just war originated\ncenturies ago, at a time when humanity could not yet imagine the massive\ndestructive power of modern weaponry.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe problem is that the theory of just war comes from centuries ago,\nfrom a time when people could not imagine the weapons and the capacity\nfor destruction that exist today,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
This firm statement by Pope Leo extends the diplomatic rift and\npolitical tension between the Vatican and US President Donald Trump\nregarding the escalation of the conflict in Iran.<\/p>\n
The Pope has consistently called for an end to armed conflict and has\nharshly criticised political rhetoric deemed capable of triggering a\nwider war.<\/p>\n
