Poor students to get scholarships in Bogor<\/p>\n

As many as 1,165 students of junior high schools from
\neconomically disadvantaged families in the Bogor municipality
\nwill receive scholarships from the West Java provincial
\nadministration, an official says.<\/p>\n
Head of Bogor Municipal Basic Education Agency Ade Syarief
\nsaid on Friday that each student would receive Rp 1 million
\n(US$104.17), which would be used to finance their education.<\/p>\n
\"Students receiving the scholarship program will hold school
\nIDs where it will be indicated that they are receivers of the
\nfacility,\" said Ade.<\/p>\n
The funds, however, will not be given to the students, but
\nto the schools where they study.<\/p>\n
Ade said that the scholarship finds would be taken from West
\nJava's 2005 budget. He did not mention when the funds would be
\ndisbursed.<\/p>\n
The new school year begins in mid July.<\/p>\n
\"The facility will be used to pay fees, buy school uniforms,
\nscout uniforms, sports uniforms, books and writing tools,\" the
\nofficial added.<\/p>\n
According to Ade, the program is aimed at helping students
\nfrom poor families to continue their education at least to
\ncomplete junior high school, which is in line with the country's
\nnine-year compulsory education policy.<\/p>\n
Ade said while the provincial administration had a scholarship
\nprogram for junior high students, the municipal administration
\nwould give scholarships to elementary school students from poor
\nfamilies next school year.<\/p>\n
He said each elementary student would received Rp 750,000 per
\nyear. He did not mention how many students would receive the
\nscholarship.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Sri Endras Iswarini of the Alternative Education
\nCircle for Women (Kapal Perempuan), said that such a scholarship
\nprogram for disadvantaged would not be long term in nature.<\/p>\n
She demanded that the government provide free education for
\nchildren of low-income families.<\/p>\n
If the government was able to prevent banks from collapsing by
\nusing the state budget, it should also provide free education for
\nstudents from all disadvantaged families by using the state
\nbudget, Sri argued.<\/p>\n
\"We hope both the central government and the regional
\nadministration will be able to put aside 20 percent of their
\nrespective annual budgets for education as stipulated in our
\nConstitution,\" she added.<\/p>",
